Moon Like Craters
Eight months in vessels surveying the Queen Charlotte Sound resulted in one of the largest nautical charting bathymetry data sets being being captured for Land Information New Zealand (LINZ). Discovery Marine lead the hydrographic survey component under the direction of one of New Zealand’s most respected hydrographic surveyors, Bruce Wallen. Bruce and the team took a further 12 months to process and render the nautical charting data and reports.The final results were delivered under contract to NIWA, which were combined with NIWA’s science deliverables to provide a comprehensive data set to LINZ.
Queen Charlotte Sound had not been systematically surveyed since the 1940’s. The survey has provided incredible coverage, data and imagery of the sounds area. Along with numerous wrecks, the survey revealed unique crater-like geological features located throughout the Sound. Not normally visible with standard echo sounders the state of the art multibeam echo sounders unveiled these unusual features. For more on the survey see:
